(Yes, this is an Inception movie-inside-a-movie movie.) The director remarks, “That was weirdly erotic, but also not.” Yuck.

On the other end, though, there’s also a decidedly misplaced (if not entirely anti-) LGBT scene where the lead female character Finley, disguised as her male alter ego Huck (both played by Bailee Madison) a la Back to the Future, has to kiss her evil stepsister (who has a huge interest in Huck) for the movie they are acting in. To give credit where it’s due, this was the one element where the writers did not go ridiculously over-the-top and cliched there was no focus on the fact that he was gay, nor even a random declaration of his sexuality just so everyone could know. There is an LGBT+ side character: the evil step brother Kale (Richard Harmon), who is actually the best character in the movie (more on that later). Our little LGBT+ hearts fluttered – could this actually be a queer movie? A Cinderella Story: Starstruck (which I want to call “A Country Cinderella Story” every single time) is the fifth direct-to-DVD sequel, but has its own unique twist: the alter-ego of the female lead is male. Each of these are exactly what you would expect. took Hilary Duff’s Cinderella Story success formula and bled it dry, spawning FIVE (!) direct-to-TV/DVD sequels. It’s tried and true, and all very Miraculous Ladybug (2015). The female lead pretends to be someone else for one reason or another (in this case, to get a second shot at becoming famous) and the male lead falls in love with both versions of her. The classic Cinderella Story Dynamic™ is quite simple, but effective.

Despite our differences, though, we can both agree that A Cinderella Story (2004) starring Lizzie McGuire (Hilary Duff) is a certified classic that deserves to be preserved in the U.S. My friend, however, absolutely lives for them I think factually there is not a single romance movie pre-2010’s that she hasn’t seen. I give A Cinderella Story: Starstruck 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 9 to 18, plus adults. Parents should be aware that there is some mild language and action. The message of A Cinderella Story: Starstruck is to follow your dream. Richard Harmon pulls off the role with astounding ability, setting a great example for any future step brothers. Kale is a difficult character to play, as there aren't really similar characters in other Cinderella stories. Richard Harmon as Kale, Bailee Madison as Finley and Michael Evans Behling as Jackson give some of the best performances. The actors seem to have real bonding, which is special. The stepmother, Valerian (April Telek), is as unbearable as always, though she's still a great character. These two siblings argue a lot another different aspect between this version and the original. One of the best touches that I like is including a stepbrother, Kale (Richard Harmon), along with the traditional stepsister, Saffron (Lillian Doucet- Roche).
There's a unique addition behind every twist and turn of the plot. Instead of mice, Finley's support friends are the farm animals. The resemblances to the original Cinderella are hard to find, but are there nonetheless. It's probably the most innovative princess story I've ever seen. The film is a Cinderella story, but it isn't easily predicted like most new versions are. However, we constantly see colorful views that leave me in awe. Settings are chosen with precision though some do seem a bit extraordinary for a normal town and farm land.
The cinematographers seem to have lots of tricks up their sleeves to make this film look amazing.
The lighting and perspective make the images natural, and they use tons of creative angles. The cinematography is better than most of what I've seen. Will she keep her secret? The fear of discovery is constant, and she soon realizes that honesty could truly be the best policy, especially when it comes to her dream.Ī Cinderella Story: Starstruck checks every box. The film spirals into drama as Finley faces a constant inner conflict and tries to be more than one person. Finley aspires to be a Hollywood star, so when a new action film comes to town, bringing famous actor Jackson Stone (Michael Evans Behling) along with it, she becomes focused on the audition stage. It's one of my favorites of 2021 so far, and it's suitable for nearly any audience!įinley Tremaine (Bailee Madison) is not your average Cinderella and neither is this story.
